Mentor Corner

Bible Reading

Recently, a mentor suggested reading the Bible through together as a pair.  She and her mentee are in Revelation and are excited to finish this goal.  Each time they reached a specific goal, they would celebrate their progress.  Little rewards are a fun way to keep going!

This pair read through the Bible chronologically, but there are many great Bible reading plans available on the web!   Click here for helpful online reading plans.

Expectations

Remember to set realistic expectations in the amount of time it takes to feel comfortable in your relationship with your mentee.  Resist the temptation to compare your relationship with other mentoring pairs.

Set Boundaries

Knowing what to expect always helps a relationship.

Your mentee needs to clearly understand who she is in your life and how she fits in.  No wondering about quidelines.

Having lines of communication open right from the start will make the relationship work better for both of you.

Clearly laid out boundaries allow your mentee to relax in the relationship, share herself more freely, and receive more completely all that you have to offer her.

These tips were taken from the book Finding a Mentor, Being a Mentor.  For further help on setting boundaries, see this section of the book.

I would like to hear more from Nina E. and the “journaling” that she and her mentee did last year. She shared at the mentor orientation and it was unique the way that it was done.

  2. First meeting with my mentee today went well! Over coffee we discussed our different spiritual gifts and personality types as well as the pros and cons associated with these. I gave her my “Get-to-Know You” questionnaire to fill out for next time and we are looking down the road toward areas of growth she would like to address. So excited to see how God will work!
